A big worry for many homeowners…and renters…when the weather gets this cold is frozen pipes. Just imagine, you and your family are all curled up and cozy in bed when you are startled awake by the sound of running water. It’s 2 am and you get out of bed to find the water line in your bathroom has burst! This leads to some chaos, a lot of towels and a late night call to a plumber. Before you find yourself in the situation, there are a few things you can do to help prevent the freezing and then bursting of your pipes.

  • Wrap pipes in heat tape or thermostatically-controlled heat cables.
  • Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warm air.
  • Disconnect any outdoor hoses and faucets and cut off those valves completely
  • Trickle a little water out of your faucets periodically to keep water moving within the pipes.

When it’s cold you automatically bundle up, your home needs a little help doing the same. The extra precautions could help protect you from a big homeowners or renters insurance claim later. In the unfortunate event you do have a claim, give us a call as soon as possible at 419-522-9892.
